The State of Augmented Reality Technology in 2018

Imagine a world where you look around and everywhere you look, you see overlays providing information as if you had a heads-up display in a video game. With augmented reality (AR) that world isn’t very far away, and the incredible possibilities are almost limitless.

Augmented reality is a result of using technology to superimpose elements – video, images, sound or GPS data etc. to the real world around us. On the contrary, virtual reality is a way to immerse users in an entirely virtual world.

AR is not as new as you might think, with references to the concept going back to the early 1900’s. The first fully immersive AR systems, Virtual Fixtures came out in 1992, developed by Louis Rosenberg (who is currently the CEO of an artificial Intelligence company called Unanimous AI).

Fast forward to today, the AR industry is growing with a rapid rate with many strong forces at play, such as Google Glass, Microsoft Hololens, among several others. It can be said that AR is going to be the future technology for the new generation and its economy, possibly even replacing computers, tablet and even the smartphones.

But how far has this emerging technology come so far? What is the current state of augmented reality technology? The infographic, contributed by Make a Video Hub team gives us a quick overview.
